Golden Agri-Resources (GAR) is one of the largest palm oil plantation companies in the world. Our plantations are located in Indonesia and we manage more than 500,000 hectares of palm oil plantations (including smallholder farmers). We are a leading seed-to-shelf agribusiness—from growing oil palms with farmers to producing food and fuel for the present and future.
Sustainability is an essential part of our business and we are guided by our GAR Social and Environmental Policy (GSEP). The GSEP is the roadmap we share with our employees, smallholders, suppliers, and customers as we work together to realise GAR’s vision of a sustainable palm oil industry.
GAR believes that farming palm oil is an effective way to create jobs and alleviate poverty, and provides opportunities for communities to secure a better livelihood for themselves. As one of the largest plantation companies in Indonesia, operating largely in rural and remote areas, we not only play an active role in the well-being of our employees, but also in the wider communities where we operate.
Founded in 1996, GAR was listed on the Singapore Exchange in 1999 and the corporate office is located in Singapore. GAR has several subsidiaries which include PT SMART Tbk, our business operating in Indonesia; our distribution business in Europe and the US; Dami Mas, our certified DxP seed producer and supplier; and our various businesses in China.
PT SMART Tbk
Our palm oil plantations cover more than 138,000 hectares (including smallholder farmers). Our primary activities are cultivating and harvesting oil palms, processing fresh fruit bunches (FFBs) into crude palm oil (CPO) and palm kernel, and refining CPO into value-added products such as cooking oil, margarine, shortening, biodiesel and oleochemicals, as well as merchandising palm products throughout the world. We operate 16 mills, 5 kernel crushing plants and 4 refineries, across Indonesia.
Besides bulk and industrial oil, our refined products are also marketed under several brands well-loved consumer brands such as Filma and Kunci Mas. Today, these brands have been recognised for their high quality and command significant market share in their respective segments in Indonesia.
Based in Jakarta, we were founded in 1962 and listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in 1992. A subsidiary of Golden Agri-Resources (GAR), we have Sinar Mas Oleochemical, SMART Research Institute (SMARTRI), and SMART Biotechnology Centre within our operations.
Sinar Mas Oleochemical
With products made from responsibly sourced natural oils and fats from palm oil and palm kernel oil, Sinar Mas Oleochemical and our supply chains are RSPO and GMP-certified for cosmetic ingredients and GMP+B2 certified for feed safety. All products are also Halal, Kosher, and ISO (9001:2008 & 14001:2004) certified.
Sinar Mas Oleochemical was established in 1993. We are a subsidiary of PT SMART Tbk, itself owned by Golden Agri-Resources (GAR).
Dami Mas is one of the top DxP seed suppliers in Indonesia with an annual production potential of 24 M germinated seeds. The success of Dami Mas can be attributed to our strong research and development strategies by SMART Research Institute (SMARTRI) and the Plant Production and Biotechnology Division.
The Dami Mas DxP seed is well noted for its high yields as well as its high oil extraction ratios – two traits much sought after by oil palm growers. The Dami Mas DxP is developed from the advanced and well-proven oil palm breeding populations: Dami Mas Deli Dura as the “D” parent and the Dami Mas Avros as the “P” parent.
Golden-Agri Maritime (GAM) is the chartering arm of Golden Agri-Resources (GAR). We exclusively manage GAR’s transportation needs for their international palm oil trade not only for the CPO but also all liquid derivative products of CPO, such as:
- RBD PO
- RBD PKO
- RBD OLEIN
- RBD STEARIN
We build intelligent shipping and logistics solutions with ship owners. GAR’s steady growth in international trade means consistency in export volumes and continued leadership as one of the world’s largest exporters of palm oil.
At GAM, we believe in supplying the world with sustainable and good quality palm oil in a timely and safe manner. We adopt an environmentally friendly approach to our logistic solutions following the 2020 International Maritime Organization (IMO) Fuel Sulphur Regulation.
Businesses in China
Deep-sea port and storage facility: We have secured a deep-sea port that is strategically located in Eastern China along with a storage facility. The port is equipped with high-speed Buhler mechanical and pneumatic bulk grain unloaders that can operate at design rates of 1,250 tonnes per hour.
Crushing: We own domestic crushing facility that allows us to import soybean and process it domestically. The crushing plant is located in Ningbo with a total capacity of 1,002,000 tonnes per annum.
Refining: Our refinery in Ningbo has a total capacity of 280,000 tonnes per annum. We also have a margarine and shortening plant with a capacity of 66,000 tonnes per annum.
Sales and distribution network: Most of our products are sold in China’s domestic market. We have set up sales representative and liaison offices and collaborate with leading distributors.
SMART Research Institute (SMARTRI)
SMART Research Institute (SMARTRI) supports the sustainable development of Golden Agri-Resources (GAR), through innovation, developing best practices, and an improved oil palm breeding programme. Located in Riau, Indonesia, a significant number of our research programmes are cross-disciplinary, such as various breeding programmes to develop planting material that is disease-tolerant (e.g. against Ganoderma disease), drought-resistant or more efficient in nutrient uptake and usage, as well as research into carbon accounting and biodiversity assessment within our plantations
SMART Biotechnology Centre
SMART Biotechnology Centre is a research facility in Sentul, Bogor operated by our Plant Production and Biotechnology Division. It acts as an innovation hub, coming up with improvements in tissue culture to increase the quality of seed stock that leads to higher productivity per hectare.
